UMW AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS WORTH RM2.5 MILLION TO 53 UNDERGRADUATES FOR 2017

SHAH ALAM, 24 November 2017 – UMW Holdings Berhad, one of the nation’s leading conglomerates, today awarded 53 undergraduate students from local universities with scholarships through its annual scholarship award programme. This is part of the Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives which are focused on three main pillars, namely, education, environment and community development.

The scholarship awards were presented by UMW Group Chairman, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Hamad Kama Piah bin Che Othman and UMW President & Group CEO, Badrul Feisal bin Abdul Rahim. Also present at the ceremony were the recipients’ parents, student affairs representatives from the universities and UMW’s senior management.

Held at UMW Auditorium, the ceremony saw each recipient receiving scholarship worth up to RM12,000 per year for a maximum of 4 years, focusing on field of studies that are related to UMW’s core businesses of Automotive, Equipment and Manufacturing & Engineering. Additionally, all the undergraduates also received laptop computers to help facilitate their learning in this digital age.

This scholarship programme is aimed at attracting and identifying potential future talents and leaders for the organization at an early stage. Since its inception in 2005, the scholarship programme has been further refined through the years and has been an effective recruitment tool for UMW. The scholarship programme is open to the children of UMW’s employees as well as the general public.

“Providing financial support to deserving students is part of our goal towards being a caring and responsible corporate organisation that contributes towards the nation-building agenda. This also augurs well with UMW’s motto of Beyond Boundaries® where our focus goes beyond just strong business performance to include enriching community lives as we move forward. This year, 53 students will benefit from our full-scholarship programme. We have allocated RM2.5 million for this year to help students excel in their studies.

Further to the scholarships, we also plan to provide special development and engagement programmes for these students on areas such as leadership and other interpersonal skills in order to prepare them for the working environment”, said Badrul Feisal bin Abdul Rahim.

The scholarship programme is also designed to drive employer branding initiatives in the UMW Group’s efforts to be the employer of choice. Upon completion of their degree programmes, selected graduates will be offered employment with the UMW Group.
