UMW CONTRIBUTES RM500,000 TO FIVE LOCAL UNIVERSITIES, LAUNCHES COFFEE TABLE BOOK AT CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS GALA DINNER

SHAH ALAM, 28 November 2017 – UMW Holdings Berhad, one of the nation’s leading conglomerates, is proudly celebrating its centenary this year. The Group, which started operations in Singapore, organised a gala dinner to honour and thank its shareholders, business partners and customers for their unwavering support. The Group also recorded its utmost appreciation to the Malaysian government for the strong support and cooperation rendered over the years. About 1,000 guests attended the event at Setia City Convention Centre.

The guest of honour at the event was Datuk Seri J. Jayasiri, Secretary-General, Ministry of International Trade & Industry, who represented Datuk Mustapa Mohamed, Minister of International Trade & Industry. Among the distinguished guests present were Tan Sri Abdul Wahid Omar, Group Chairman of Permodalan Nasional Berhad, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Hamad Kama Piah Che Othman, Group Chairman, UMW Holdings Berhad, Badrul Feisal Abdul Rahim, President & Group CEO, UMW Holdings Berhad, Board of Directors of UMW Holdings Berhad and senior government officials.

To commemorate the landmark centenary celebrations, a coffee table book on the UMW Group was launched. The book documented the Group’s rich history from its humble beginnings as an automotive repair workshop on Orchard Road in Singapore into one of Malaysia’s foremost corporations. The coffee table book also detailed major milestones and successes achieved over the last 100 years, and featured inspiring and memorable quotes from past leaders of the organisation as well as remarks from its long-serving employees.

As part of its centenary celebrations, the UMW Group upheld its long-standing role as a responsible corporate citizen that fosters nation-building and human capital development. At the event, the Group contributed from its zakat fund RM100,000 each to five local universities, namely, Universiti Teknologi Mara, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Universiti Islam Antrabangsa and Universiti Malaysia Perlis.

“The long sweep of UMW’s illustrious 100-year history has always been defined by continuous forward motion – achieved through the remarkable resilience of our employees, the staunch support of our stakeholders and a constant, ceaseless broadening of our horizons. This is the legacy that we honour and live up to as we relentlessly explore new growth opportunities. We are immensely proud that UMW has turned the page on its first century of operations; and we will continue to work closely with our stakeholders to propel the Group to even greater heights over the next 100 years to come. We also would like to thank our shareholders, Government, business partners and customers for all the cooperation and trust given to UMW,” said Badrul Feisal Abdul Rahim.
