KUALA LUMPUR, 10 March 2021 – The UMW Group continues to record encouraging sales for February 2021 through both UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) and its associate company, Perodua. The sustained demand was attributed to the sales tax exemption which has been extended to 30 June 2021 and the introduction of improved models.
– UMW Toyota Motor’s sales surged by 32.0% in February 2021
– Perodua registered sales of 16,583 units in February 2021
UMWT achieved sales of 5,074 units in February 2021, 32.0% higher than the 3,845 units registered in January 2021. The surge in sales was supported by the strong demand for the improved Vios and Yaris launched on 17 December 2020, as well as the enhanced Fortuner and Innova introduced on 2 February 2021. As part of its efforts to promote Toyota’s advanced technologies, UMWT recently launched a new brand pillar and branding initiative known as Toyota Synergised Mobility. Toyota Synergised Mobility will highlight and showcase Toyota’s advanced technologies included and deployed in its products to deliver superior mobility solutions. It represents Toyota’s synergy with the future, living with tomorrow’s technologies, today.
Perodua registered sales of 16,583 units in February 2021, slightly lower than the 16,894 units registered in January 2021, mainly due to lower number of working days in the month as well as festive holidays. To further expand its product line-up to its customers, Perodua introduced the all-new Ativa, a compact SUV on 3 March. The Perodua Ativa, the first model under the advanced Perodua Smart Build blueprint, is offered in three variants with prices ranging from RM61,500 to RM72,000, on-the-road before insurance in Peninsular Malaysia. Ativa’s competitive pricing was made possible by its 95% localisation rate – the highest initial local content rate for any Perodua model. The response to the model has been extremely encouraging with over 6,000 bookings registered as of 5 March 2021.
To meet its production targets for 2021, the Group will purchase RM8.1 billion worth of locally sourced components this year which will invigorate the local automotive industry as well as contribute to the Malaysian economy. Of this, Perodua will purchase a record RM6.5 billion worth of components from the local vendors and will remain the biggest buyer of automotive components in Malaysia.
UMW Holdings Berhad President and Group CEO, Dato’ Ahmad Fuaad Kenali said, “The Group will continue to take advantage of the sales tax exemption to drive registration in the first half of 2021. The production operations will continue with strict compliance with the COVID-19 SOP at all our plants as well as the vendors. We wish to express our appreciation to our customers for their strong support of our products and services. Customers continue to be our focus and the Group will continue to strive to offer improved and innovative products and services to meet their expectations.”
