When Nur Fitri Aini Mazalan spotted a scholarship call on Twitter back in 2019, she took a chance that would change the course of her career.

Three rounds of interviews later, she became a UMW scholar and soon after graduation joined UMW IT Services as a Network Executive. Two years in, she moved to the Project Management Office to take on a broader mandate as Executive, Digital & Innovation — a role that lets her turn ideas into improvements the business can feel.

Her first impression of Sime UMW was simple and decisive: the people and culture. Warm, welcoming and supportive colleagues made it easy to settle in despite the steep learning curve of a new environment. That foundation of trust would prove crucial as she transitioned from pure technical work to orchestrating projects that cut across teams and functions.

In her current role, Fitri’s most significant early lesson came fast. Within months she was entrusted to manage multiple IT projects, learning the craft of project management directly from seniors who were generous with guidance and feedback. The variety suits her temperament. Routine dampens her energy, while diverse projects — each with new processes, people and lessons — keep her motivated and engaged.

Not everything came easily. As a young professional, Fitri initially found it challenging to earn stakeholders’ trust. Instead of trying to persuade through words, she focused on delivering results. Momentum built with every milestone hit and every issue resolved. Over time that track record became her strongest advocate.

Among the initiatives she is proudest of is the digitisation of procurement processes. Moving from manual workflows to digital systems is never just a technology swap. It requires mapping what truly matters, removing needless steps and designing for clarity and accountability. Contributing to that transformation gave her a clear view of how digital change creates real business value — saving time, improving data quality and allowing teams to focus on higher-impact work.

Fitri sees her role as part of Sime UMW’s wider shift toward being more agile and future-ready. By managing projects that streamline processes and strengthen efficiency, she helps the organisation make steady progress on its transformation agenda. The impact is both structural and cultural. Each successful delivery builds confidence, shows what “good” looks like and encourages teams to push for the next improvement.

Being a UMW scholar shaped her perspective early. Exposure to leaders — from the chairman to directors — broadened her understanding of how decisions are made and why context matters. It also taught her to be proactive, ask better questions and approach problems with curiosity rather than certainty.

Looking ahead, Fitri aims to deepen her expertise in project management and digital transformation, and to lead larger, more complex programmes that move the needle for the business. Her north star is simple: create meaningful impact while growing the capabilities of the teams around her.

For young talents considering a path at Sime UMW, her advice is refreshingly practical: seek guidance, ask questions, be proactive and engage with others. Good projects rise on the strength of good relationships. Clarity beats assumption. Initiative beats inertia.
