Can you share a bit about your current role and responsibilities at UMW Industrial Power Services?

My role focuses on the Oil & Gas and Renewable Energy sectors, particularly green hydrogen. I oversee departmental operations comprising the sales team, bidding and proposals, project execution, and aftersales services—ensuring alignment with the company’s strategic goals.

My key responsibilities include developing and executing business strategies, leading and mentoring team members, managing budgets efficiently, and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders, including clients and contractors.

How long have you been with Sime UMW, and what brought you into the Marine & Power Equipment sector?

As of 22 June 2025, I’ve been with Sime UMW for 10 years. My passion for rotating equipment, especially air compressors, was what initially drew me to the Marine & Power Equipment sector.

What inspired you to pursue a career in this field, and how has your journey evolved over the years?

I was inspired by the opportunity to deliver better solutions to the Oil & Gas industry, particularly in addressing technical challenges that require both engineering expertise and strategic negotiation skills. My journey at Sime UMW has been filled with valuable lessons and continuous adaptation. It’s not just about reaching this point in my career—it’s about the growth I’ve experienced along the way.

What are some of the most unique or challenging aspects of working in the sector?

Managing communication gaps with clients, especially when there are technical discrepancies, can be challenging. Attracting and retaining skilled talent is another ongoing issue, as the Oil & Gas industry is highly competitive.

Can you describe a project or moment in your career here that you’re particularly proud of?

One of my proudest moments was successfully doubling the gross profit margin during the renewal of the Price Agreement (PA) and Long-Term Service Agreement (LTSA) with major clients.

How do you stay on top of the technical demands and fast-paced nature of the industry?

I stay updated by embracing new technologies, prioritising continuous learning, managing time effectively, and maintaining strong communication within my teams.

How has working at Sime UMW supported your professional development?

The company’s leadership development programmes have given me the confidence and skills to lead effectively in a dynamic and ever-evolving business environment.

As a senior manager, how do you motivate your team—especially in high-pressure environments?

I focus on clear communication, providing strong support, and creating a positive, collaborative work environment.

What keeps you personally motivated in your role after all these years?

I’m constantly driven by the opportunity to learn and take on new challenges. With every new responsibility, I gain fresh insights that help me grow personally and professionally.

How do you balance strategic decision-making with on-the-ground realities in a technical industry like this?

By aligning strategic goals with practical realities—evaluating potential impacts and formulating flexible responses that can be realistically implemented.

What’s one key lesson you’ve learned in your time here that you carry with you every day?

Focus on changing the situation, not necessarily the people involved. Solutions come easier when we shift our approach.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone just entering the sector, what would it be?

Recognise your limitations, work on improving them, and don’t be too hard on yourself. Growth is a process of both learning and unlearning.

Looking ahead, what are your aspirations—both for your team and your personal growth?

I aim to double our revenue over the next decade by expanding our Oil & Gas offerings and providing more advanced rotating equipment solutions. This growth will create new opportunities for my team to enhance their skills and accelerate their career development.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work that helps you recharge?

I run 10 kilometres daily and enjoy travelling around the world. Both keep me grounded and reenergised.

How would your colleagues describe you in three words?

Personable, resilient, and results-driven.
