At UMW Toyota Motor, quality is more than a promise — it’s a culture.

And few embody that culture better than Jason Ong Kim Heng, General Manager of Quality Assurance and Technical Service, whose 21-year journey with the company reflects the true spirit of the Toyota Way.

Jason began his career in 2005 as a young Technical Support Engineer. Through the years, he has advanced through multiple functions in Quality and Technical Service, growing into a leader who blends technical mastery with people-driven purpose. “I’ve always viewed every challenge as an opportunity to learn,” he says. “That mindset, along with courage, responsibility and decisiveness, has shaped the leader I am today.”

For Jason, quality assurance and technical service are not just technical functions — they are frontline roles that protect the customer experience. He takes pride in knowing that every Toyota vehicle delivered to Malaysian roads meets the highest standards of safety, reliability and performance. “It’s about doing what’s right, not what’s easy,” he shares.

Among his proudest milestones is leading Toyota Malaysia’s Quality Reflection Day, where global and regional leaders — including Mr. Miyamoto, Global CQO, and Mr. Maeda, Asia Region CEO — witnessed the company’s strong culture of accountability and continuous improvement. “It wasn’t just an event; it was a statement of who we are,” Jason recalls. “We reaffirmed that quality is everyone’s responsibility — from the genba to the boardroom.”

As a leader, Jason upholds Toyota’s Kaizen philosophy through action. He leads by doing, showing that leadership is about courage and integrity, not position. His approach centres on empathy, ownership and consistency — qualities he also encourages in his team. “When we act sincerely and challenge ourselves daily, we inspire others to do the same,” he says.

Beyond the factory floors and field reports, Jason’s resilience stems from a strong personal foundation. His family, he says, keeps him grounded and reminds him of what truly matters — love, integrity, and being present for those who count on you. “Being a husband and father has taught me as much about leadership as any role I’ve had,” he reflects.

To young professionals aspiring to lead in technical or quality roles, his advice is simple yet powerful: take ownership, be brave enough to decide, and humble enough to learn. “Leadership in quality isn’t about perfection,” Jason concludes. “It’s about sincerity, consistency and the commitment to do what’s right — every time.”
